What does this number mean?

An estimate for someone arriving now, not a guaranteed wait. It is not the total time at the hospital. Sicker patients are seen first. How Alberta Health Services defines it

The colours are set by us, not by Alberta Health Services. Under 2 hours is the Canadian goal for even the least urgent patients. cihi.ca

About Misericordia Community Hospital

Misericordia Community Hospital is a hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. Emergency department: All ages. This service is open 24 hours a day.

Misericordia Community Hospital, usually called the Misericordia Hospital, is a Covenant Health hospital on 87 Avenue in west Edmonton. The Misericordia Sisters founded it in 1900 as a maternity hospital in a converted warehouse, and it moved to its current site in 1969. Covenant Health, a Catholic organization, runs it in cooperation with Alberta Health Services.

Its emergency department is open 24/7 for patients of all ages. The current department opened on November 21, 2023, with nearly triple the old space, including 18 acute care spaces with cardiac monitoring and 8 mental health spaces, and mental health emergencies are treated there around the clock.

The hospital is home to the Craniofacial Care Program, which rebuilds the face, head and neck after cancer or injury, or when structures are missing at birth. It also runs what the University of Alberta calls Alberta's only publicly funded hyperbaric oxygen program. Buses serve the hospital on 87 Avenue.

Misericordia Hospital ER questions

Understanding the wait

What is the Misericordia Hospital ER wait right now?

At 6:25 pm MDT, the estimated wait to see a physician was 8 hours 8 minutes (very long wait), according to Alberta Health Services. It changes as patients arrive, and the most urgent cases are always seen first.

Source: Alberta Health Services

How is the Misericordia Hospital ER wait time calculated?

Alberta Health Services publishes it as "Estimated wait to see a physician": An estimate of how long it might take from an assessment by a triage nurse in the emergency department or urgent care to being seen by a physician. It does not represent the total time patients may spend at the hospital, and it does not apply to critically ill or injured patients, who are always seen quickly. We check it every 5 minutes. People with the most urgent needs are always seen first, so your own wait may be shorter or longer.

Is there an ER near Misericordia Hospital with a shorter wait?

"Nearby ER wait times right now", at the end of this page, lists the nearest tracked sites with their current waits. These are the nearest facilities in our tracked dataset, not necessarily every local care option. A shorter estimate is not a recommendation to travel farther. If it is an emergency, call 911.

Should I go to urgent care instead of Misericordia Hospital?

Call 911 for anything life-threatening. An emergency department is for serious problems that need a hospital. Urgent care treats problems that are not life-threatening but need care the same day. For minor problems, a family doctor, walk-in clinic or pharmacist may be quicker. If you are not sure where to go, call Health Link at 811 for advice from a nurse.
