HHS emergency wait times by city

Each city lists its sites from shortest to longest current wait. Sites without a published wait are listed further down.

How HHS calculates its wait times

“Average wait to see a doctor (last 6 hours)”

The length of time between when you arrive to the front desk to check in and when you see a doctor. It is calculated by averaging the time that each patient has waited over the last six hours and is updated automatically every 15 minutes. Patients are triaged with the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale and the sickest are seen first, so your own wait may be shorter or longer.

People with the most urgent needs are always seen first, so your own wait may be shorter or longer. Hamilton Emergency Wait Times’s definition

About Hamilton Health Sciences

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) was formed in 1996, according to its timeline, when Hamilton General, Henderson General, McMaster University Medical Centre, McMaster Children's Hospital and Chedoke Hospital merged. It trains health professionals with McMaster University and Mohawk College. HHS runs the emergency departments at Hamilton General Hospital, Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre and McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton, and at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby, all open 24 hours a day, as well as the West End Urgent Care Centre on Main Street West. Children and youth aged 17 and under go to McMaster Children's, the kids-only emergency department.

HHS and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton post their emergency waits together on hamiltonemergencywaittimes.ca. The figure is the length of time between arriving at the front desk to check in and seeing a doctor, averaged over the last six hours and updated automatically every 15 minutes.

Which HHS hospitals have a children's ER?

Yes: McMaster Children's Hospital. Children's emergency departments see children and teens; adults should go to an adult or all-ages ER. In a life-threatening emergency, call 911.

Does HHS publish a wait for every site?

Yes. Every ER and urgent care centre listed on this page has a published wait estimate.

Should I go to a HHS urgent care centre or the ER?

Hamilton's hospitals suggest an urgent care centre for cuts or wounds that may need stitches, sprains, strains or deep bruises, mild to moderate asthma attacks, ear, urinary tract and upper respiratory infections, coughs and congestion, diarrhea, sore throats, insect bites and rashes. Go to an emergency department for severe bleeding, trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure, broken bones, a partial or full amputation, a head injury, sudden dizziness or trouble seeing, or severe abdominal pain. If it is life-threatening, call 911.

Why are other people seen before me at Hamilton Health Sciences ERs?

Hamilton's emergency departments and urgent care centres don't work on a first-come, first-served basis. When you arrive, you are assessed with the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS), and the most critical patients are seen first, whether they come by ambulance or on their own. In simple terms, the sickest patients are seen most quickly.
