About emergency care in Edmonton

Edmonton's two trauma centres are the University of Alberta Hospital, a Level 1 trauma centre whose Firefighters Burn Treatment Unit takes patients from across Western Canada, and the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Children and teens have their own emergency department at the Stollery Children's Hospital, which AHS describes as the only specialized emergency department and referral centre for children in central and northern Alberta. It shares a building with the University of Alberta Hospital but has a separate Children's Emergency Entrance.

The Grey Nuns and Misericordia community hospitals are run by Covenant Health; AHS publishes their waits alongside its own. St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc, Devon and Stony Plain each have a hospital emergency department, and all of them are in Alberta's Edmonton health corridor.

How are Edmonton ER wait times calculated?

Alberta Health Services publishes "Estimated wait to see a physician": An estimate of how long it might take from an assessment by a triage nurse in the emergency department or urgent care to being seen by a physician. It does not represent the total time patients may spend at the hospital, and it does not apply to critically ill or injured patients, who are always seen quickly.

These measures can differ in their starting point and statistic. Compare estimates within the same measurement group. Patients with the most urgent needs are seen first.
