About UBC Hospital

UBC Hospital is a hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia. Emergency department: All ages.

UBC Hospital (UBCH) is a Vancouver Coastal Health teaching hospital at Koerner Pavilion, 2211 Wesbrook Mall, on the University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver. VCH calls it one of British Columbia's foremost teaching and research facilities. It has four buildings: Koerner Pavilion, the main hospital building; Purdy Pavilion; Detwiller Pavilion; and the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health, which opened in February 2014. VCH describes it as a hub for complex orthopedic surgery, plastic and breast reconstruction, gynecology, urology and general surgery programs. The Leon Judah Blackmore Centre for Sleep Disorders, established in 1981, is the provincial referral centre for complex sleep disorders and serves patients aged 16 and over. Psychiatric inpatient services, including the BC Psychosis Program for adults, are at Detwiller Pavilion. UBC Neurology describes a sub-acute stroke unit at UBCH, where patients move after acute stroke care at Vancouver General Hospital. The hospital has an eight-bed high acuity unit for complex scheduled surgical cases, but it does not list an intensive care unit.

The emergency department is not open around the clock. It is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day of the year, and VCH says it provides emergency care for life-threatening illness, injury or overdose during those hours. Follow the signs for the Emergency Department at 2211 Wesbrook Mall; patients who can walk or use a wheelchair can be dropped off outside the ED doors. VCH gives no age limit for the department. It notes that the BC Children's Hospital Emergency Department in Vancouver is open 24 hours a day and provides emergency care to children and youth up to the age of 16. When the department is closed, go to another emergency department or call 9-1-1. For problems that are not emergencies, VCH asks people to consider an urgent and primary care centre. The UBC Urgent and Primary Care Centre, at 6165 Agronomy Road, opened on March 31, 2026 and is a separate clinic from the hospital. It is open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 10 pm and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm, with regular hours on statutory holidays, and is walk-in only.

UBC Hospital ER questions

Understanding the wait

What is the UBC Hospital ER wait right now?

At 6:18 pm PDT, the 9 in 10 patients seen within was 3 hours 15 minutes (long wait), according to edwaittimes.ca. It changes as patients arrive, and the most urgent cases are always seen first.

Source: edwaittimes.ca

Is there an ER near UBC Hospital with a shorter wait?

"Nearby ER wait times right now", at the end of this page, lists the nearest tracked sites with their current waits. These are the nearest facilities in our tracked dataset, not necessarily every local care option. A shorter estimate is not a recommendation to travel farther. If it is an emergency, call 911.

Why does UBC Hospital warn of long ER waits after 6 pm?

edwaittimes.ca posts this note for UBC Hospital: more people arrive after 6 pm, so you can expect long waits, and it asks you to consider a closer emergency department or urgent and primary care centre. The ER itself closes at 8 pm. In an emergency, call 911.

What does the UBC Hospital ER wait time mean?

edwaittimes.ca describes its ED wait as the time from triage assessment to seeing a doctor or nurse practitioner. The displayed estimate is the 90th percentile: about 9 in 10 patients are seen within that time, while about 1 in 10 may wait longer. It is not an average, an appointment time or a guarantee.

Source: edwaittimes.ca: about the estimates

Is the estimated length of stay at UBC Hospital the same as the wait time?

No. Estimated length of stay covers arrival to discharge home for 75% of patients, excluding people admitted to hospital. It includes assessment, tests and treatment. The wait-to-clinician estimate and this total-visit measure describe different parts of care.

Source: edwaittimes.ca: about the estimates

How often does edwaittimes.ca update UBC Hospital's estimate?

The publisher says its online estimates refresh every five minutes. This is separate from our checks of the source and does not mean the number must change at every refresh. The page shows the timestamp available for the latest information.

Source: edwaittimes.ca: about the estimates

Why can the wait at UBC Hospital change?

Demand can change suddenly as patients arrive, particularly after a serious incident. Patients with more urgent needs receive priority, so your own wait can be shorter or longer than the estimate.

Where is UBC Hospital, and is there parking?

UBC Hospital is at 2211 Wesbrook Mall, Vancouver, BC V6T 2B5. Health Sciences and Thunderbird parkades: $2.25 per half hour, up to $22 a day ($11 evenings and weekends). Should I go to urgent care instead of UBC Hospital?

Call 911 for anything life-threatening. An emergency department is for serious problems that need a hospital. Urgent care treats problems that are not life-threatening but need care the same day. For minor problems, a family doctor, walk-in clinic or pharmacist may be quicker. If you are not sure where to go, call HealthLink BC at 811 for advice from a nurse.

Is the UBC Hospital ER the same as the UBC urgent and primary care centre?

No. They are separate. The UBC Hospital emergency department is at 2211 Wesbrook Mall and is open 8 am to 8 pm every day. The UBC Urgent and Primary Care Centre is a clinic at 6165 Agronomy Road, open Monday to Saturday 8 am to 10 pm and Sunday 9 am to 5 pm. When the ER is closed, go to another emergency department or call 911.

Should I choose UBC Hospital using the online wait time?

The figures provide general information, not a recommendation about where to seek care. Travel, recent treatment at a hospital and your health needs also matter. For a serious emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For advice about non-emergency options, contact HealthLink BC at 811.
