We check it every 5 minutes and show its own label for the number. How this page works
9 in 10 patients are seen within this time; about 1 in 10 wait longer. It is not the total time at the hospital, and sicker patients are seen first. How edwaittimes.ca defines it
The colours are set by us, not by edwaittimes.ca. Under 2 hours is the Canadian goal for even the least urgent patients. cihi.ca

Mount Saint Joseph Hospital is a hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia. Emergency department: All ages.
Mount Saint Joseph Hospital (MSJ) is a Providence Health Care community hospital at 3080 Prince Edward Street in Vancouver. It was founded by the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, who from 1921 provided health and education services primarily to the Asian community, and it opened on 2 October 1946. Providence describes MSJ today as a 160-bed acute and extended care facility. It has a high acuity unit, a radiology clinic with x-ray, CT, mammography and ultrasound, a laboratory, a surgical eye centre with three operating rooms, and outpatient clinics including cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, neurology and the Providence Breast Centre. The second floor is a long-term care home for 60 residents, and an eight-bed non-oncology clinical trials unit was announced by the Province in September 2025.
The emergency department is open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. every day, including holidays. It is not a 24-hour department: outside those hours, St. Paul's Hospital at 1081 Burrard Street has the Providence emergency department that operates 24/7. The entrance is off Prince Edward Street. Providence is improving the emergency department, and as of September 1, 2026 the temporary emergency and Surgical Day Care doors are just past the one-way vehicle entrance. Both Providence emergency departments see patients of all ages, including children, and pregnancy, birthing and newborn care is listed at St. Paul's Hospital. For problems that are not emergencies, Vancouver Coastal Health's Southeast Urgent and Primary Care Centre, 5880 Victoria Drive, is an east Vancouver option. It is open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 10 pm and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm, with regular hours on statutory holidays, and is walk-in only.

"Nearby ER wait times right now", at the end of this page, lists the nearest tracked sites with their current waits. These are the nearest facilities in our tracked dataset, not necessarily every local care option. A shorter estimate is not a recommendation to travel farther. If it is an emergency, call 911.

edwaittimes.ca posts this note for Mount Saint Joseph: more people arrive after 6 pm, so you can expect long waits, and it asks you to consider a closer emergency department or urgent and primary care centre. The ER is open 8 am to 8 pm, not around the clock. After 8 pm, go to St. Paul's or another 24-hour ER, or call 911.

edwaittimes.ca describes its ED wait as the time from triage assessment to seeing a doctor or nurse practitioner. The displayed estimate is the 90th percentile: about 9 in 10 patients are seen within that time, while about 1 in 10 may wait longer. It is not an average, an appointment time or a guarantee.
No. Estimated length of stay covers arrival to discharge home for 75% of patients, excluding people admitted to hospital. It includes assessment, tests and treatment. The wait-to-clinician estimate and this total-visit measure describe different parts of care.
The publisher says its online estimates refresh every five minutes. This is separate from our checks of the source and does not mean the number must change at every refresh. The page shows the timestamp available for the latest information.
Demand can change suddenly as patients arrive, particularly after a serious incident. Patients with more urgent needs receive priority, so your own wait can be shorter or longer than the estimate.
Open 8 am – 8 pm daily. Hours can change on holidays; the wait panel above shows whether it is open now.

Call 911 for anything life-threatening. An emergency department is for serious problems that need a hospital. Urgent care treats problems that are not life-threatening but need care the same day. For minor problems, a family doctor, walk-in clinic or pharmacist may be quicker. If you are not sure where to go, call HealthLink BC at 811 for advice from a nurse.
