About Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre

Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre is a hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. Emergency department: Adults 18+. This service is open 24 hours a day.

Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre (JHCC) is a Hamilton Health Sciences hospital at 711 Concession Street, on the Hamilton escarpment. HHS's history pages trace it to April 1917, when Mount Hamilton Hospital opened as a 100-bed hospital for veterans of the First World War. It later became Henderson General Hospital and was redeveloped and renamed Juravinski Hospital in 2010, which HHS's timeline calls a centre for excellence in orthopedics, oncology and outpatient surgery. HHS says it is home to one of the largest and most comprehensive regional cancer programs in Ontario: the Juravinski Cancer Centre next door, at 699 Concession Street and linked to the hospital by indoor hallways, provides chemotherapy and radiation, while the hospital offers surgical oncology, complex malignant hematology, hip and knee replacement, and adult stem cell transplant and cellular therapy.

The emergency department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and receives ambulances and walk-in patients. HHS lists it with Hamilton General as an adult emergency department: children and youth 17 and under go to McMaster Children's Hospital at 1200 Main Street West. HHS's energy plan describes Juravinski as a general medical/surgical hospital with a community emergency department; adult trauma, stroke and burn care are at Hamilton General, and labour and delivery is at McMaster University Medical Centre. HHS's location page says plans are under way to add a new patient care tower and advanced diagnostics.

The wait shown here is the one Hamilton's hospitals publish on hamiltonemergencywaittimes.ca: the length of time between arriving at the front desk to check in and seeing a doctor, averaged over the last six hours and updated automatically every 15 minutes. Patients are triaged with the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale and the sickest are seen first. For problems that are not emergencies, HHS's West End Urgent Care Centre at 690 Main Street West is open 10 am to 9 pm every day, and St. Joseph's King Campus Urgent Care at 2757 King Street East is open 8 am to 10 pm every day. Neither needs an appointment, and ambulances are not accepted at King Campus. You can also call Health811 at 811 for free medical advice. In an emergency, call 911.

Should I go to urgent care instead of Juravinski Hospital?

Call 911 for anything life-threatening. An emergency department is for serious problems that need a hospital. Urgent care treats problems that are not life-threatening but need care the same day. I see a specialist at Juravinski Hospital. Should I go to its ER?

Hamilton's hospitals ask you to contact that specialist, or the hospital where they work, before going to an emergency department for a condition they already treat, unless it is an emergency. For chest pain, trouble breathing, severe bleeding or any other emergency, call 911.
