We check it every 5 minutes and show its own label for the number. How this page works
9 in 10 patients are seen within this time; about 1 in 10 wait longer. It is not the total time at the hospital, and sicker patients are seen first. How edwaittimes.ca defines it
The colours are set by us, not by edwaittimes.ca. Under 2 hours is the Canadian goal for even the least urgent patients. cihi.ca

View all departmentsBurnaby Hospital is a hospital in Burnaby, British Columbia. Emergency department: All ages. This service is open 24 hours a day.
Burnaby Hospital is a Fraser Health hospital at 3935 Kincaid Street in Burnaby. It opened in 1952 as Burnaby General Hospital and was renamed Burnaby Hospital in 1982. Fraser Health describes it as a 286-bed hospital offering medical, surgical, obstetric, tertiary palliative care, psychiatry, critical care and 24/7 emergency services, and names it one of its stroke unit sites. Phase 1 of its redevelopment opened to patients on March 10, 2026: a six-storey Health Care Pavilion with 83 beds, including a mental health inpatient unit, maternity and neonatal intensive care units, a medicine unit and outpatient clinics, and an expanded Support Facilities Building that holds the larger Burnaby Community Emergency Department and the Jim Pattison Surgery Centre. Phase 2 would add the Keith and Betty Beedie Acute Care Tower and the BC Cancer – Burnaby McCarthy Centre; the Province said in 2024 it expected them to be ready for patients in 2030.
The emergency department is open 24 hours a day, every day, and sees patients of all ages. The expansion added 23 treatment spaces and a dedicated mental-health zone. Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., park in the Emergency Parking Lot and enter through the Emergency entrance; from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. visitors can also use the West Wing, East and South entrances. Births are cared for in the hospital's maternity unit, which has single-room labour and delivery. For health concerns that are not emergencies, Fraser Health points to the Metrotown Urgent and Primary Care Centre at 102-4555 Kingsway, Burnaby, open 9 am to 8 pm every day including statutory holidays (604-451-4888), and the Edmonds Urgent and Primary Care Centre at #201-7315 Edmonds Street, open Monday to Friday 5 to 9 pm, Saturday 2 to 8 pm, and Sunday and statutory holidays 12 to 6 pm (604-519-3787). Since August 2026 Fraser Health has shown its emergency wait times as unavailable on edwaittimes.ca, and this page will show the wait as soon as it is published again. Fraser Health Virtual Care is available at 1-800-314-0999.

"Nearby ER wait times right now", at the end of this page, lists the nearest tracked sites with their current waits. These are the nearest facilities in our tracked dataset, not necessarily every local care option. A shorter estimate is not a recommendation to travel farther. If it is an emergency, call 911.

edwaittimes.ca describes its ED wait as the time from triage assessment to seeing a doctor or nurse practitioner. The displayed estimate is the 90th percentile: about 9 in 10 patients are seen within that time, while about 1 in 10 may wait longer. It is not an average, an appointment time or a guarantee.
No. Estimated length of stay covers arrival to discharge home for 75% of patients, excluding people admitted to hospital. It includes assessment, tests and treatment. The wait-to-clinician estimate and this total-visit measure describe different parts of care.
The publisher says its online estimates refresh every five minutes. This is separate from our checks of the source and does not mean the number must change at every refresh. The page shows the timestamp available for the latest information.
Demand can change suddenly as patients arrive, particularly after a serious incident. Patients with more urgent needs receive priority, so your own wait can be shorter or longer than the estimate.
