What does this number mean?

An estimate for someone arriving now, not a guaranteed wait. It is not the total time at the hospital. Sicker patients are seen first. How Winnipeg Regional Health Authority defines it

The colours are set by us, not by Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Under 2 hours is the Canadian goal for even the least urgent patients. cihi.ca

About Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg

Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg is a hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Adult emergency: Ages 17+. This service is open 24 hours a day.

Health Sciences Centre (HSC) is Manitoba's largest health care facility and a major referral centre for Manitoba, northwestern Ontario and Nunavut. Run by Shared Health, it is the province's tertiary centre for trauma, transplants, burns, neurosciences, complex cancer care and pediatric care, and offers every hospital-based clinical service available in Manitoba except cardiac surgery and eye surgery. It was formed in 1973 by combining Winnipeg General Hospital, Children's Hospital of Winnipeg and other hospitals into one campus.

HSC has the largest and busiest emergency departments in Manitoba, with more than 115,000 visits a year. The Adult Emergency is for patients 17 years or older; go to 700 William Avenue and report to the Triage Desk. After registration and triage, patients wait to be called to see a doctor, nurse or nurse practitioner, and are seen in order of priority, not arrival time. Some less urgent patients are sent to the Minor Treatment Clinic in the William Avenue Mall.

HSC Winnipeg ER questions

Understanding the wait

Why isn't the HSC Winnipeg ER wait showing right now?

We do not have a current wait estimate from Winnipeg Regional Health Authority for this site. The latest update may be unavailable or out of date. This page shows the number again when a current reading is available. If it is an emergency, call 911.

How is the HSC Winnipeg ER wait time calculated?

Winnipeg Regional Health Authority publishes it as "Wait to see a physician, PA or NP": The time in hours between being registered and seeing a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner. Due to rapidly changing demands and the need to see the sickest patients first, WRHA notes that your own wait time may be more or less than the time displayed. We check it every 5 minutes. People with the most urgent needs are always seen first, so your own wait may be shorter or longer.

Is there an ER near HSC Winnipeg with a shorter wait?

"Nearby ER wait times right now", at the end of this page, lists the nearest tracked sites with their current waits. These are the nearest facilities in our tracked dataset, not necessarily every local care option. A shorter estimate is not a recommendation to travel farther. If it is an emergency, call 911.

Should I go to urgent care instead of HSC Winnipeg?

Call 911 for anything life-threatening. An emergency department is for serious problems that need a hospital. Urgent care treats problems that are not life-threatening but need care the same day. For minor problems, a family doctor, walk-in clinic or pharmacist may be quicker. If you are not sure where to go, call Health Links – Info Santé at 204-788-8200 for advice from a nurse.
