About Grand River Hospital

Grand River Hospital is a hospital in Kitchener, Ontario. Emergency department. This service is open 24 hours a day.

WRHN @ Midtown is Waterloo Regional Health Network's hospital at 835 King Street West in Kitchener, known until 2025 as the Kitchener-Waterloo campus of Grand River Hospital. It was founded in 1895 as the K-W Hospital, a 70-bed community hospital for Kitchener and Waterloo, and in 1995 merged with the Freeport hospital to form Grand River Hospital. In April 2025 Grand River Hospital and St. Mary's General Hospital became one organization, WRHN.

The emergency department is on the second floor of A wing (use the Emergency Department entrance) and is open 24 hours a day. Midtown is where WRHN offers emergency mental health and addiction assessments, with a six-bed Crisis Extended Assessment Unit for children, youth and adults. It is the District Stroke Centre, one of only two local hospitals able to give the clot-busting drug tenecteplase and assess patients for endovascular thrombectomy. It is also home to the WRHN Cancer Centre, the Marjorie Carroll Childbirth Centre, a 24-bed Level 2B neonatal intensive care unit and most of WRHN's care for children and youth.

Grand River Hospital ER questions

Understanding the wait

What is the Grand River Hospital ER wait right now?

At 7:30 pm EDT, the longest expected wait to see a doctor was 5 hours 57 minutes (very long wait), according to WRHN @ Midtown. It changes as patients arrive, and the most urgent cases are always seen first.

Source: WRHN @ Midtown

How is the Grand River Hospital ER wait time calculated?

WRHN @ Midtown publishes it as "Longest expected wait to see a doctor": An estimate of how long you may wait, from arrival, to see a doctor or nurse practitioner. WRHN updates it every hour. Patients are seen based on how sick they are, not in the order they arrive, so it may change if patients with more serious needs arrive. We check it every 10 minutes. People with the most urgent needs are always seen first, so your own wait may be shorter or longer.

Is there an ER near Grand River Hospital with a shorter wait?

"Nearby ER wait times right now", at the end of this page, lists the nearest tracked sites with their current waits. These are the nearest facilities in our tracked dataset, not necessarily every local care option. A shorter estimate is not a recommendation to travel farther. If it is an emergency, call 911.

Should I go to urgent care instead of Grand River Hospital?

Call 911 for anything life-threatening. An emergency department is for serious problems that need a hospital. Urgent care treats problems that are not life-threatening but need care the same day. For minor problems, a family doctor, walk-in clinic or pharmacist may be quicker. If you are not sure where to go, call Health811 at 811 for advice from a nurse.
